Open houses involve presentations on a range of fascinating astronomical phenomena\, instruction on the telescopes\, and\, when weather permits\, observing with our beautiful historic Fitz telescope as well as modern supplemental telescopes. Please note: astronomy events at the Observatory take place even if the weather does not permit observing. We strive to always have interesting things for you to do.  Tickets are required\, and open house registrations are capped at 100 guests.  You can arrive anytime from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm.  You will be given a time slot for visiting the dome.  While you are waiting\, check out other features and presentations.

SUMMARY:Lunar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Observatory invites you to join us for the next total lunar eclipse! Late on May 15\, 2022\, the Moon will totally enter the Earth’s shadow\, creating an astounding orange color across the Moon’s face\, allowing a unique view of the moon and night sky. Lunar eclipses happen around two times a year\, and total lunar eclipses are even rarer!\n\nThe DO will be opening its doors for most of the duration of the eclipse\, from 10:30 PM until 1:00 AM. We will be providing telescope observing through our historic Henry Fitz refractor\, along with outside observing with smaller telescopes. Telescope observing is weather dependent.

SUMMARY:The Beauty and Mystery of  Comets: A talk@the Detroit Observatory
DESCRIPTION:Two years ago Comet NEOWISE made its way through the solar system\, giving humans a wonderful look at the beauty and mystery of these mysterious objects. Comets make infrequent\, and often stunning\, appearances in our night sky. Some comets shine brightly enough to be seen by the naked eye\, and some pass through our solar system quietly and quickly. The Detroit Observatory has its own unique history with comets\, with a few being discovered at the observatory with its powerful Fitz refractor.\n\nJoin the Detroit Observatory and Assistant Director for Astronomy Austin Edmister for a talk sharing the wonders of these celestial nomads. He will walk guests through the DO’s history with comets\, observing Comet NEOWISE during the pandemic\, and which comets might make a showing in the future.\n\nAll events at the Observatory include observing through its historic Fitz refractor\, along with outside observing with smaller a telescope. Observing is weather dependent.

SUMMARY:Astronomy Night: Seeing in Depth
DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Observatory Seeing in Depth Astronomy Nights provide a more intimate and intensive experience than our regular open houses.  Registration is limited to 24 guests\, which allows everyone to have more time in the dome and at the telescope\, if weather permits observing.  The event is built around a particular theme which links the history of the Observatory and the University to modern astronomy and observing the heavens. \nMay’s event will focus on asteroids and double stars — as investigated by the Observatory’s first director\, Franz Brünnow.  Brünnow helped bring to the United States the most up-to-date methods in astronomy in the mid-19th century.  He was a key player in observations and calculations that established astronomical distances and helped map the solar system and the visible stars.  The evening will include presentations and discussion about Brünnow himself\, his work\, and the basics of the astronomy involved\, then and now.  If weather permits observing\, we will explore some of the same fascinating phenomena that Brünnow did\, including asteroids and double stars. (Please note: the event description previously stated there would be a focus on red stars.  That has changed.  But stay tuned for future programs focused on red stars.)
