SUMMARY:Movie Night@The Detroit Observatory: "A Trip to the Moon"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a viewing and discussion of Georges Méliès’ groundbreaking 1902 film “A Trip to the Moon\,” based on the novel by Jules Vernes. Matthew Solomon\, associate professor of film\, television and media at U-M\, and a renowned authority on early silent films\, in particular those of Méliès\, will talk about the inspiration for and making of the film\, its symbolism\, and its impact on the history of cinema.  After the film and talk\, the Observatory will be open for presentations related to lunar astronomy and\, if weather permits\, observing of the Moon using the historic 12.5″ Fitz telescope. \n  \nSolomon is the editor of Fantastic Voyages of the Cinematic Imagination: Georges Méliès’s Trip to the Moon (SUNY Press) and the author of Disappearing Tricks: Silent Film\, Houdini\, and the New Magic of the Twentieth Century\, winner of the Kraszna-Krausz award for best moving image book\, of a monograph on Chaplin’s The Gold Rush for the BFI Film Classics series\, and\, most recently\, of Méliès Boots: Footwear and Film Manufacturing in Second Industrial Revolution Paris (University of Michigan Press). He co-edits the “Cinema Cultures in Contact” book series for University of California Press and the “Out of the Archives” book series for University of Michigan Press.

SUMMARY:Science Talk@The DO: An Extragalactic Fossil Record: Uncovering the Merger History of a Galaxy\, with Katya Gozman
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, U-M Astronomy Ph.D. student Katya Gozman will explore how astronomers can learn about the formation and evolution of galaxies. Gozman will talk about galaxy mergers and how we can find evidence of past mergers in the outskirts of nearby galaxies. She will also present the results from a research project she worked on with Prof. Eric Bell in her first two years of UMich’s Astronomy PhD program. \nThe talk will be followed by tours of the Observatory.

SUMMARY:Astronomy Night: Seeing in Depth: James Craig Watson
DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Observatory Seeing in Depth Astronomy Nights provide a more intimate and intensive experience than our regular open houses.  Registration is limited to 24 guests\, which allows everyone to have more time in the dome and at the telescope\, if weather permits observing.  The event is built around a particular theme which links the history of the Observatory and the University to modern astronomy and observing the heavens. \nThis event will focus on the Observatory’s second director\, James Craig Watson — U-M’s first “celebrity scientist” and a prodigious discoverer of asteroids and\, he thought\, a new planet.

DESCRIPTION:Across the University\, fascinating stories in a range of publications are helping us learn more and more about Michigan’s rich history. Join us to learn of some examples from the past year\, and to explore a number of questions about writing the University’s history: how and why do these publications develop history content? What sorts of content do readers seem to find most engaging? How does history connect us? How does it help us better understand current events? \nOur panel will include Kim Clarke\, director of the Michigan Heritage Project; Deborah Holdship\, editor of Michigan Today; Sharon Morioka\, former editor of Michigan Alumnus; and Lara Zielin\, editor of the Bentley’s own Collections magazine. \nThis will be a hybrid event\, in person at the Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory (https://detroitobservatory.umich.edu)\, and online on YouTube.
