SUMMARY:Astronomy Night Open House
DESCRIPTION:Explore the heavens during one of our astronomy nights. Open houses involve presentations on a range of fascinating astronomical phenomena\, instruction on the telescopes\, and\, when weather permits\, observing with our beautiful historic Fitz telescope as well as modern supplemental telescopes. \nJanuary observations will include: Mars\, Jupiter\, winter star clusters \nPlease note: astronomy events at the Observatory take place even if the weather does not permit observing. We strive to always have interesting things for you to do. Tickets are required\, and open house registrations are capped at 100 guests. You can arrive anytime from 8 pm to 10 pm. You will be given a time slot for visiting the dome. While you are waiting\, check out other features and presentations.

SUMMARY:Making Michigan: Native American Students and Activists at U-M\, with Bethany Hughes
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan has a complicated history with Native American communities\, which were vital to its very existence. Join us for a discussion with Bethany Hughes\, assistant professor of American Culture\, on the historic and ongoing activism of Native American students. Do you still think it is a planet? Chances are you’re a grown up. When kids get excited about everything they are learning in astronomy\, they are tired of hearing about Pluto. This is the guide for kids to break it to you – that Pluto is not a planet – in a way even you can understand. Based on astronomer Dean Regas’ new book\, he’ll follow the history of Pluto\, how cool of a world it is\, and why it’s not a planet.” \nNight sky observing with the observatory telescopes will follow the talk\, weather permitting.

SUMMARY:Movie Night: "An Uncommon Education" Revisited: How do U-M's bicentennial videos look today?\, with Fran Blouin\, Kim Clarke\, and Gary Krenz
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean that U-M’s first president\, Henry Philip Tappan\, wanted to turn Michigan into a “true university”?  How has student activism remade Michigan over the decades?  How did one of the nation’s most prestigious student literary awards come to U-M?  What does it mean to be a leader and best — on the playing field or in the laboratory?  And\, how should you depict U-M’s history? \nFor its 2017 bicentennial\, the University of Michigan collaborated with Detroit Public Television to produce ten mini-documentaries covering questions such as these from U-M’s history.  What do those videos look like today\, six years later\, given numerous changes in the University and the world? \nFor this movie night\, we will screen several videos from the series\, and our panel will discuss those videos and the series as a whole.  The panel will consist of Fran Blouin and Kim Clarke\, who both appeared in many of the videos\, and Gary Krenz\, who directed the University’s bicentennial. \nAs with all public events at the Observatory\, this movie night will include tours of the building by our student docents\, with observing if weather permits.

SUMMARY:Seeing in Depth: A Telescope View of Mars
DESCRIPTION:As the Earth passes by Mars\, the Detroit Observatory takes a closer looks at our solar system’s rusty\, red neighbor. \nThe Detroit Observatory’s Seeing in Depth programs are a chance to take a closer look at some of the people\, places\, and sciences from the observatory’s history. Mars has occupied the imagination of earthlings for as long as they’ve pondered the night sky. As the red planet moves across Michigan’s winter night sky\, the Detroit Observatory will point its telescopes towards the red planet. We will also share stories about humanity’s understanding of Mars through the 20th century and astronomers from the DO who helped explore it. \nTalks and presentations begin at 8PM. Telescope observing is weather dependent.
