DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Observatory in Ann Arbor invites you out for a night of confusion and delight. To celebrate the many strange happenings throughout astronomical history\, we will be presenting a series of short talks designed to test the limits of your history and astronomy knowledge. Each talk could be about something true\, something wrong\, or…something fake? Confused\, yet? We certainly are! \nYes\, we know April 7 is not actually on April Fools Day\, but you’d be a fool not to check out these fantastic talks! \nTalks will begin at 8PM and are followed by tours (these are true\, we promise) of the historic observatory and telescope observing. Telescope observing depends on the weather.

SUMMARY:Astronomy Night w/ DO Astronomy Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Explore the heavens during one of our astronomy nights. Open houses involve presentations on a range of fascinating astronomical phenomena\, instruction on the telescopes\, and\, when weather permits\, observing with our beautiful historic Fitz telescope as well as modern supplemental telescopes. \nThis particular Astronomy Night will include an Astronomy Roundtable with the DO staff\, highlighting some of the cool projects\, images\, and observations we’ve completed across our first year of reopening. Each talk is 15 minutes long\, starting at 8PM and then every half hour through the evening. \nApril telescope sights: Mars\, Orion Nebula\, Sirius\, star clusters \nPlease note: astronomy events at the Observatory take place even if the weather does not permit observing. We strive to always have interesting things for you to do. Tickets are required\, and open house registrations are capped at 100 guests. You can arrive anytime from 8 pm to 10 pm. You will be given a time slot for visiting the dome. While you are waiting\, check out other features and presentations.

SUMMARY:Fabulous and Fantastical Stories from U-M's Past: A History Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:How do you build a 40-foot-long portable telescopic camera\, and what can you do with it? How did U-M’s first African American PhD astronomer pursue his effort to solve the “painfully absurd” mystery of what makes the stars shine? Where was William Fletcher — one of the first U-M Regents and the first Michigan Supreme Court chief justice — buried and why did no one know for a hundred years? \nThe Detroit Observatory is excited to host our first History Roundtable! The roundtable will feature presentations by three of our student docents\, Eva Chavez\, Sophia Grant\, and Bennett Walling.  Join us for discussion of topics like those above\, and learn about our student docent program and the range of activities that our docents undertake.  \nRefreshments will be provided. \nAs with all of our events\, the Observatory will be open for tours following the panel discussion\, with observing if weather permits.
