SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Romantic Life at U of M
DESCRIPTION:The Romantic Life at U of M Walking Tour takes you through some of the beautiful and notable portions of the Nichols Arboretum starting at the Peony Garden\, as well as a few of the dorms surrounding the Detroit Observatory\, where the tour ends. While you learn about the history surrounding these spots\, you will also get to hear some stories of the romantic lives of some of our faculty\, students\, and alumni\, as well as some other historical facts about events and lives here at the University of Michigan campus\, with an accompanying slideshow filled with photos\, scrapbook pages\, and letters. \nThe tour is about 1.5 hours long with a total of a 1.3 mile walk. It should be noted that a portion of the walking tour has a steep hill\, though there are stairs at the steepest section. Please also prepare for the weather\, as it can be very hot or rainy during tours. \nThe starting point will be outside the Peony Garden entrance\, at the Burnham House located at 1610 Washington Hts Ann Arbor\, MI 48109. \nParking is available along the street on Washington Hts\, or up off of Observatory St near Forest Hill Cemetery.

Open houses involve presentations on a range of fascinating astronomical phenomena\, instruction on the telescopes\, and\, when weather permits\, observing with our beautiful historic Fitz telescope as well as modern supplemental telescopes. \n  \nPlease note: astronomy events at the Observatory take place even if the weather does not permit observing. We offer unique tour and telescope demos when we can’t observe the night sky. Tickets are required\, and open house registrations are capped at 100 guests. You can arrive anytime from 8:30 pm to 10 pm. You will be given a time slot for visiting the dome. While you are waiting\, check out other features and presentations.

SUMMARY:Seeing in Depth: The Observatory as a Scientific Instrument
DESCRIPTION:Humans have been creating special places to observe the night sky for thousands of years. Each place was designed and built with an intention to record and learn about the cosmos. Our own Detroit Observatory was built to aid Michigan astronomers in their study of asteroids\, comets\, stars\, and more. Seeing in Depth: The Observatory as a Scientific Instrument will take you around and inside the observatory to highlight the many features and technology that made our observatory a tool of discovery and learning. \nJoin us this July 21 at 8PM to learn about the inner workings and design of a 169-year-old research observatory. \nSeeing in Depth gives visitors a closer look at some of the people\, technology\, and discoveries from the Detroit Observatory’s history. Talks and presentations feature observatory staff and begin at 8PM. Telescope observing is weather dependent and will begin after sunset.
