SUMMARY:Making Michigan: A City's Conscience: The Life and Career of Josephine Gomon
DESCRIPTION:Teacher\, columnist\, social justice activist\, politician\, advisor\, director of several public agencies\, and more: Ann Arbor native and U-M alum Josephine Fellows Gomon (LSA 1913) had an impact on Detroit\, on Michigan\, and on social justice across the nation — an impact matched by few others.  Join us for a presentation by Michelle McClellan and learn about Gomon’s life and work in the context of women’s roles in the early and mid 20th century\, including her involvement in the birth control movement and her service as  director of women personnel at the Willow Run bomber plant during WWII.  Find out why the Detroit Free Press called her “the City’s Conscience.”\n\n\nMichelle McClellan is the Johanna Meijer Magoon Principal Archivist at the Bentley Historical Library\, University of Michigan. She serves as the field archivist for the Michigan Historical Collections\, aiming to preserve diverse stories from across the state. Michelle earned her Ph.D. in American history from Stanford University and her M.S.I. from the University of Michigan. Before coming to the Bentley\, Michelle worked in academia\, museums\, and historic preservation. She has published on the history of women and medicine\, on “Little House” heritage tourism\, and on how museums and historic sites can highlight formerly hidden stories. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered about the history of the buildings that sit in the middle of campus that many associate with the Renaissance\, east coast Ivy Leagues\, or even Hogwarts? \nThis walking tour seeks to familiarize you not only with the illustrious\, imposing architecture of the Law Quadrangle here at the University of Michigan but also with the historic presence of the Law School itself. Over the course of 1.5 hours\, we will discuss the conception of the buildings themselves\, the winding roads it took to get there\, and the Law School’s many years of influence on social issues and legal education as we stroll through the Quad. Join us as we uncover stories and debunk myths about the distinctive University of Michigan Law Quadrangle. \nThe tour starts on the southeast corner of State St. and N University. SUMMARY:Art and Archives: Crafting New Stories About the Past
DESCRIPTION:Historical sources belong to everyone. This workshop invites community members to not only engage with the archives but even reshape them! Imagine combining your own experiences with a copy of a historical photo to create art that is brand new. \nDuring the workshop\, archivists from the Bentley Historical Library will teach participants about finding and understanding archival photos. \nGuest artist Avery Williams will then lead a hands-on workshop where participants create collage art with images from the Bentley’s archival collections about the Ann Arbor area’s community life. \nAvery explains\, “I’m drawn to the fragments and remnants that I encounter in the archive: a sly look between two people in the corner of a photograph\, a bit of handwriting in the margin of a typed document. I’m excited to work with the Bentley Historical Library and their rich collections to introduce participants to my collage practice. Together we’ll look closely at the archive to craft new stories about the past.” \nThis workshop welcomes members of the Ann Arbor community ages 14+ as well as UM students\, staff\, and faculty. Dinner provided. \n\nAbout the speaker:\nAvery Williamson is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores historical and contemporary notions of the archive\, domestic space\, Black pleasure and spatiotemporal collapse. She explores the narratives of Black women in personal and institutional archives. Her artwork has been featured in The New York Times\, Harper’s Magazine\, Guardian News\, Oprah Magazine and Martha Stewart Magazine. She graduated from Harvard College with a degree in Visual Studies and currently lives and works in Southeast Michigan.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Romantic Life at U of M
DESCRIPTION:The Romantic Life at U of M Walking Tour takes you through some of the beautiful and notable portions of the Nichols Arboretum starting at the Peony Garden\, as well as a few of the dorms surrounding the Detroit Observatory\, where the tour ends. While you learn about the history surrounding these spots\, you will also get to hear some stories of the romantic lives of some of our faculty\, students\, and alumni\, as well as some other historical facts about events and lives here at the University of Michigan campus\, with an accompanying slideshow filled with photos\, scrapbook pages\, and letters found here: https://myumi.ch/XnZrd \n  \nThe tour is about 1.5 hours long with a total of a 1.3 mile walk. It should be noted that a portion of the walking tour has a steep hill\, though there are stairs at the steepest section. Please also prepare for the weather\, as it can be very hot or rainy during tours. \n  \nThe starting point will be outside the Peony Garden entrance\, at the Burnham House located at 1610 Washington Hts Ann Arbor\, MI 48109. \n  \nParking is available along the street on Washington Hts\, in the Palmer Drive Parking Garage\, or up off of Observatory St near Forest Hill Cemetery. The observatory is within 2 blocks of multiple city and campus bus stops.

Talks and presentations feature observatory staff and begin at 8PM. Telescope observing is weather dependent and will begin after sunset.

DESCRIPTION:For Chinese people\, the Mid-Autumn Festival (Zhongqiu Jie) is a time to meet with family and friends and enjoy the beautiful full moon together. The Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, U-M Astronomy\, and Detroit Observatory invite you to the observatory for a celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The evening will include presentations from U-M Astronomy on the lunar surface features and robotic moon exploration\, tours of the Detroit Observatory\, and telescope observing of the moon. Families are welcome! \nThe Kenneth G. Lieberthal and Richard H. Rogel Center for Chinese Studies (LRCCS) was founded in 1961 and has been a national leader in Chinese Studies for over 60 years. A member of the International Institute\, LRCCS provides students\, specialists\, and the public with expert resources and a deeper understanding of contemporary and historical issues related to China.
