SUMMARY:UM Astronomy Thinking Big: From the Detroit Observatory to the 39 Meter ELT
DESCRIPTION:Science@DO is joined by U-M Astronomy Professor Michael Meyer to share the story of how Michigan got involved with the biggest optical telescope in the world. \n  \nUM’s first president Henry Tappan realized the value of research infrastructure\, \ncommissioning one of the largest telescopes of its time for Detroit Observatory. \nThat tradition has continued to inspire discoveries through the decades using \nthe MDM Observatories in Arizona\, and the Magellan Observatory in Chile. Now UM \nhas joined four instrument consortia to build a suite of instruments for the 39 meter \nELT which will be the largest telescope of its kind when completed late this decade. \nThe ELT will have over x30 the light gathering power of NASA’s JWST and over \nx15 the fineness of detail of the Hubble Space Telescope. UM astronomers \nwill participate in the exciting discoveries it will enable from observations \nof the first stars and galaxies formed early in the Universe to discovery \nand characterization of planets like Earth around the very nearest stars \nto the Sun. \n  \nProf. Michael Meyer has more than 25 years of international scientific research experience\, in the fields of galactic and infrared astronomy\, as well as the formation\, evolution\, and characterization of planetary systems (and associated implications on the prospects for life in the Universe). He has experience participating in the development of ground- and space-based instrumentation\, including both the NIRCam and NIRISS instruments for the James Webb Space Telescope as well as high contrast imaging systems/spectrographs for 6-10 meter telescopes and next generation extremely large telescopes. \n  \nTalk begins at 7PM. The historic Detroit Observatory will be open for tours following the talk. Telescope observing will be available\, weather permitting.

DESCRIPTION:Arts & Resistance: “Reimagining Mars: From ‘Canals’ to the Russian Revolution”\nSanil Mittal\, LSA Astronomy and Physics; Docent\, Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory\nThursday\, October 12\, 2023; 7:00 pm\n\nThis talk will dive deep into the so-called “canals” of Mars — first described in 1877 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli — and how they made Mars a central landscape in many works of fiction in the late 19th and early 20th century. We will see some examples of cultural and artistic interpretation of Mars and the canals in science fiction and the impact of such representations on progressive politics and revolution\, primarily in the early and mid 20th century. The talk is presented as part of the LSA Arts & Resistance Theme Semester.\n\nSanil Mittal is a Junior in LSA majoring in Astronomy and Astrophysics and Interdisciplinary Physics with a minor in Business. He is a student docent at the Detroit observatory and has imaged and processed many of the images taken through the Henry Fitz Telescope. He is also engaged in making astronomy more accessible to the public with his work as the president of the Student Astronomical Society on campus. He has previously given a talk on how Mars has been depicted in Science Fiction\, and here he expands on that idea.\n\nAs with all Observatory events\, the Observatory will be open for tours and observing\, weather permitting\, following the talk.

SUMMARY:Making Michigan: More Than "First Do No Harm": Modeling Global Engagement with the U-M/Ghana Partnership
DESCRIPTION:More Than “First Do No Harm”: Modeling Global Engagement with the U-M/Ghana Partnership \n  \nTimothy R.B. Johnson\, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s & Gender Studies \n  \nThursday\, October 19\, 2023; 7:00 pm \n  \nIn 1986\, Tim Johnson\, then chair of obstetrics and gynecology in the U-M Medical School\, traveled to Ghana as part of an initial group of Americans to reestablish relationships in medicine. The experience transformed him. Confronted with a shockingly high rate of maternal deaths that could have been prevented in the United States\, Dr. Johnson launched a partnership with Ghanaian institutions for training Ob/Gyn health workers — an unusual and singularly successful partnership\, between U-M and Ghana\, that continues to this day. The Ob/Gyn partnership led to further collaborations between U-M and Ghana\, in other medical fields and beyond\, including the social sciences and humanities. We are very excited to host this session with Dr. Johnson in connection with his new book on the partnership\, More Than “First Do No Harm\,” which demonstrates that the partnership serves as vital model for global health collaborations. \n  \nTimothy Johnson MD is Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s & Gender Studies at the University of Michigan where he was Bates Professor of the Diseases of Women and Children and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for twenty-four years. He is a high- risk obstetrician\, and his research interests are fetal behavior\, prenatal care\, medical education and capacity building for health\, global women’s health\, global health ethics\, and assessment and prevention of sexual harassment in academic medicine. He is active in international teaching and training. In 2022 he received the (UM) President’s Award for Distinguished Service in International Education. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered about the history of the buildings that sit in the middle of campus that many associate with the Renaissance\, east coast Ivy Leagues\, or even Hogwarts? \nThis walking tour seeks to familiarize you not only with the illustrious\, imposing architecture of the Law Quadrangle here at the University of Michigan but also with the historic presence of the Law School itself. Over the course of 1.5 hours\, we will discuss the conception of the buildings themselves\, the winding roads it took to get there\, and the Law School’s many years of influence on social issues and legal education as we stroll through the Quad. Join us as we uncover stories and debunk myths about the distinctive University of Michigan Law Quadrangle. \nThe tour starts on the southeast corner of State St. and N University. Please dress weather appropriate.

SUMMARY:Seeing in Depth: James Watson's Search for New Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Seeing in Depth provide a more intimate and intensive experience than our regular open houses. Registration is limited to 40 guests\, which allows everyone to have more time in the dome and at the telescope\, if weather permits observing. The event is built around a particular theme which links the history of the Observatory and the University to modern astronomy and observing the heavens. \n  \nOctober’s event will focus on the observatory’s second director\, James Watson. During his time at the observatory\, Watson discovered 22 asteroids\, making him one of the most successful asteroid finders in history. This program includes a talk about Watson’s journey to the 1878 solar eclipse to search for a new planet\, discussions on Watson’s unique life story\, and demonstrations of the Henry Fitz refractor. If weather permits\, we will be observing some of the asteroids that Watson discovered using the Fitz refractor.
