SUMMARY:The Origins of the Law Quadrangle: A Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered about the history of the buildings that sit in the middle of campus that many associate with the Renaissance\, east coast Ivy Leagues\, or even Hogwarts? \nThis walking tour seeks to familiarize you not only with the illustrious\, imposing architecture of the Law Quadrangle here at the University of Michigan but also with the historic presence of the Law School itself. Over the course of 1.5 hours\, we will discuss the conception of the buildings themselves\, the winding roads it took to get there\, and the Law School’s many years of influence on social issues and legal education as we stroll through the Quad. Join us as we uncover stories and debunk myths about the distinctive University of Michigan Law Quadrangle. \nThe tour starts on the southeast corner of State St. and N University. Please dress weather appropriate.

DESCRIPTION:“Four Years of ‘Making Michigan’ and Four Decades at Michigan: Some Reflections” \nGary Krenz\, Director\, Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory \nThursday\, December 7\, 2023 \n7:00 pm \nWhat are some key moments in U-M history over the past four decades?  How did they come about and what might they mean in a larger context?  Gary Krenz has hosted Making Michigan the last four years\, and before that\, he had a career that included time in the Physics Department during U-M’s concerted efforts to rebuild the physical sciences; a span in the Office of the Vice President for Research which saw significant efforts in undergraduate research and the engagement of several national research issues; seventeen years in the President’s Office\, serving presidents and interim presidents from Homer Neal to Mary Sue Coleman; directing the planning for the University’s bicentennial; and recently\, working to develop the Detroit Observatory as a center for promoting the understanding of U-M history\, science\, and research.  In this talk\, he will reflect on themes that emerge from Making Michigan and from his career at U-M.  He will also share anecdotes about some of the activities he has been involved with and some of the people he has known. \n\n\nIf you’d like to attend this event in person at the Observatory\, registration can be found here\nIf you’d like to attend this event virtually\, registration can be found here

SUMMARY:Astronomy Night
DESCRIPTION:Explore the heavens during one of our astronomy nights. Open houses involve presentations on a range of fascinating astronomical phenomena\, instruction on the telescopes\, and\, when weather permits\, observing with our beautiful historic Fitz telescope as well as modern supplemental telescopes. \n  \nPlease note: astronomy events at the Observatory take place even if the weather does not permit observing. We offer unique tour and telescope demos when we can’t observe the night sky. Tickets are required\, and open house registrations are capped at 100 guests. You can arrive anytime from 8:30 pm to 10 pm. You will be given a time slot for visiting the dome. While you are waiting\, check out other features and presentations.
