SUMMARY:Mapping the Sky: Celestial Coordinates from the Babylonians to Ptolemy
DESCRIPTION:DO Feature Speaker: Professor Francesca Schironi\, U-M Classical Studies \nModern astronomers find the positions of celestial bodies in the sky using coordinate systems\, that uniquely identify the position of a celestial object (a planet\, a star\, a galaxy) through a pair of easily measurable angles. Now a common tool in modern science\, such coordinate systems have not been always available in the past; rather\, they are the result of a long evolution which started as far back as the Babylonians in first millennium BCE. This talk will outline the history of celestial coordinates from their early beginning in ancient Babylon to their final establishment with Ptolemy (ca. 100-170 CE)\, with a special focus on the great innovations introduced by one of the greatest astronomers of the ancient world: Hipparchus of Nicaea (ca. 150 BCE). \nTalk begins at 7PM at the Detroit Observatory. Tours of the historic Detroit Observatory will be available after the talk\, including telescope observing\, if weather permits.

SUMMARY:Making Michigan: How U-M's First Hospital Made History
DESCRIPTION:Medical training in nineteenth-century America was unregulated and erratic. Future doctors learned their craft from apprenticeships or in medical schools with wildly varying standards. When U-M came to Ann Arbor in 1837 calls for creating its own medical school were widespread\, but it did not open one for another decade. Even so\, it rapidly became the University’s largest department and in 1870 became the first medical school in the country to admit female students. The early medical curriculum was centered around lectures and recitations; students seeking more practical training were on their own. And Ann Arbor was a small town\, forcing them to travel elsewhere in search of it. Seeking to change this\, in 1869 U-M became the first university in the country to open its own hospital. In so doing transformed medical education both for itself but also for the United States. \n  \nJoel Howell received his BS at Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University\, his MD and residency in internal medicine at the University of Chicago\, and his PhD in the History and Sociology of Science at the University of Pennsylvania. At UM he is the Elizabeth Farrand Professor of the History of Medicine and is a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine in the Medical School\, in the Department of History in LSA\, and in the Department of Health Management & Policy in the School of Public Health. His historical research attempts to understand when (and why) we have become so convinced that the key to better medicine will come through technology and science\, including projects in Brazil and Ethiopia. He has published extensively on the history of the University of Michigan. He is also the founding Director of the Medical Arts Program\, which offers opportunities for medical students and residents to attend arts events and meet with artists\, as well as to create art themselves (including both music and painting). \n\n  \nIf you’d like to attend this event in person at the Observatory\, registration can be found here\nIf you’d like to attend this event virtually\, registration can be found here

University Ave. and State St.\, on the outer northwest corner of the Law Quad. \nHave you ever wondered about the history of the buildings that sit in the middle of campus that many associate with the Renaissance\, east coast Ivy Leagues\, or even Hogwarts? \nThis walking tour seeks to familiarize you not only with the illustrious\, imposing architecture of the Law Quadrangle here at the University of Michigan but also with the historic presence of the Law School itself. Over the course of 1.5 hours\, we will discuss the conception of the buildings themselves\, the winding roads it took to get there\, and the Law School’s many years of influence on social issues and legal education as we stroll through the Quad. Join us as we uncover stories and debunk myths about the distinctive University of Michigan Law Quadrangle.
