Free admission; no registration required. \n\nObservatory Tours: 1 hour guided tour of the Detroit Observatory\, including Historic Telescope Observing of the seasonal night sky. Tours begin at 8:00\, 8:30\, 9:00\, and 9:30 PM.\nWalk-in Visits: 8:00pm-10:30 PM. View exhibits and observe with the historic Fitz telescope.\n\nTelescope observing is weather permitting.

DESCRIPTION:When the University of Michigan first opened its Children’s Psychiatric Hospital it was a revolutionary creation. Join us to hear from Professor Laura Hirshbein as she traces U-M’s efforts to provide care for children by creating this groundbreaking program\, focusing not just on psychoanalysis but also all aspects of children’s illnesses\, from the emotional to the physical. \nRefreshments will be provided. \nProfessor Laura Hirshbein is the George E Wantz M.D. Distinguished Professor of the History of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry at Michigan Medicine. She received her M.D. from the University of Michigan and her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins\, and her research interests focus on the history of psychiatry\, health policy\, and diagnosis with a particular focus on children’s healthcare services.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Creating Michigan: Key Moments in U-M’s Early History
DESCRIPTION:Explore the first 70 years of U-M history\, from the university’s Native American land accession and its origins in Detroit in 1817 to its move to Ann Arbor and emergence as a research university after 1837. We’ll traverse the original 40-acre campus\, learning about the professors\, presidents\, and students who walked the Diag nearly two centuries ago.  \nGuided walking tour led by student docents from the Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory. Duration: 1.5 hours; 0.6 miles. \nMeet at the steps of Angell Hall facing State Street.  \nTour will take place in rain or snow\, but will be cancelled for severe weather (registrants will be notified via email). \nRegistration required.
