SUMMARY:Michigan and the American Civil War: A Conversation with Historian Jack Dempsey
DESCRIPTION:The American Civil War was a bloody four-year conflict that not only ended slavery in the United States\, but fundamentally changed the country in innumerable ways that still echo today. The young state of Michigan played a key role in the union’s victory both on and off the battlefield. Join us for a conversation with historian Jack Dempsey about Michiganders’ Civil War experiences and how its legacy shaped Michigan history. \nRefreshments will be provided. \nPart of the Making Michigan lecture series. In conjunction with the exhibition “Fill the Ranks”: the University of Michigan and the Civil War\, on display September 24\, 2026-July 2027. \nJack Dempsey is an avid historian who has long been interested in the Civil War and its role in Michigan’s history and cultural heritage. An award-winning author he has written eleven books\, numerous articles\, and given innumerable talks to academic and general audiences\, as well as serving as President of the Michigan Historical Commission. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Michigan State University and a law degree from George Washington University.
