Event Details

Two years ago Comet NEOWISE made its way through the solar system, giving humans a wonderful look at the beauty and mystery of these mysterious objects. Comets make infrequent, and often stunning, appearances in our night sky. Some comets shine brightly enough to be seen by the naked eye, and some pass through our solar system quietly and quickly. The Detroit Observatory has its own unique history with comets, with a few being discovered at the observatory with its powerful Fitz refractor.
Join the Detroit Observatory and Assistant Director for Astronomy Austin Edmister for a talk sharing the wonders of these celestial nomads. He will walk guests through the DO’s history with comets, observing Comet NEOWISE during the pandemic, and which comets might make a showing in the future.
All events at the Observatory include observing through its historic Fitz refractor, along with outside observing with smaller a telescope. Observing is weather dependent.
